Domestic and Family Violence Behaviour Change Programs at Wiser Ways: Taking Responsibility and Creating Safer Relationships
Domestic and family violence is a complex issue that causes significant harm. Patterns of aggression, intimidation, control, and coercive behaviour deeply affect partners, children, families, and communities. At Wiser Ways, our Domestic and Family Violence Behaviour Change Program provides a structured, respectful, and accountability-based pathway for individuals who recognise that their behaviour has caused harm and want to understand it, take responsibility, and work towards genuine change.
This program is designed for people who have used violence or controlling behaviour in their relationships, whether physical, emotional, financial, verbal, sexual, or psychological. Many participants come to us through referrals from legal professionals, community services, or family court processes. Others self-refer because they have reached a point where they want to do better, break patterns, and learn how to respond differently in moments of stress, conflict, or emotional overwhelm.
The program is evidence-informed, grounded in responsibility and self-reflection, and delivered with a strong focus on safety for partners, former partners, and children. Our approach is firm, fair, and supportive. We do not shame participants; instead, we guide them through a structured learning process that helps them understand their behaviour, the impact it has had, and the skills needed to create lasting change.
Program Structure
The Domestic and Family Violence Program includes five targeted modules aimed at increasing insight, developing emotional awareness, and building safe behaviour:
Module 1: Understanding What Anger Is and How It Affects You and Those Around You
Participants explore the nature of anger, how it develops, and how it influences communication, decision-making, and relationship dynamics. This module highlights the real-world consequences of harmful behaviour for partners, children, and families.
Module 2: Understanding Your Anger
This module focuses on personal patterns, triggers, early warning signs, and the underlying emotions that often sit beneath anger. Participants begin to map their own behaviour cycles and recognise how control, fear, or stress have shaped their responses.
Module 3: Making Change Possible
Participants learn strategies for interrupting harmful behaviour, de-escalating conflict, and developing more respectful and accountable ways of responding. The focus is on responsibility, choice, and replacing reactive patterns with safer alternatives.
Module 4: Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses and Learning How to Use Them
This module helps participants build insight into their own strengths while acknowledging the areas that require attention. The goal is to develop healthy relational skills, emotional insight, and communication approaches that promote respect and stability.
Module 5: Making Genuine, Lasting Change
The final module emphasises long-term behaviour change, respectful behaviour, and strategies for maintaining safety and accountability over time. Participants develop a personalised plan that supports responsible decision-making and healthy relationship patterns.
