4.3 Listen to Experiences from Professionals in the Field

In this section, you have an opportunity to listen to a webinar from experienced social workers discussing the challenges of self-care in social work and how important it is to learn how to self-manage in this profession. Every profession has different stressors, however, there is a lot of overlap in balancing professional responsibilities and self-care, and social work is used as an example here. You may find other resources for industry specific self-care.

Self-care from Professional Social Workers

This webinar is about an hour long, and so there is a time commitment involved in this section. However, one person who watched the video stated that some of the takeaway information from the conversations shifted his entire perspective about self-care so it’s worth a watch.

Here’s a poignant quote the student drew from the video. It’s from Jennifer Nadel, a British author, former journalist, and political activist known for her work on social justice and co-founding the gender equality organisation Compassion in Politics.

“When we suppress our needs, we model that neglect and abuse are acceptable”

In the next module, you will get to experiment with developing your own self-care plan.
